Try the local street-food

Thai food is famous. Whether you buy it from a street stall, at the shabby restaurant around the corner or in your hotel’s upscale restaurant, you will definitely get the original taste. You would be surprised but there was one rule which has worked well every time. The worse the restaurant looked, the better it tasted to us. Really. We started the day with a meaty and chippy soup with shrimp or chicken. For lunch was the best option rice noodles with cashew nuts and seafood, famous as Pad Thai and for dinner, fish and for dessert, fresh coconut ice cream. We’ll give you a simple tip. Taste a lot and each meal.

Get to know Buddhist temples

The twelve-metre-tall Buddha made of gold surely couldn´t be be missed. It is located on the small island of Wat Phra Yai in the northeastern part of the island. It was built in 1972 and is undoubtedly one of the island’s biggest attractions. The only thing you should know is that you should be respectful at these places. The monks living in the monasteries are very peaceful people and tourists in sacred places have to follow certain rules. For example, not to have uncovered shoulders or dress above the knees. You surely should not miss out the 18-armed statue of Shiva, which is located near the Great Buddha.

There are many waterfalls on the island, but two waterfalls called Na Muang are definitely worth mentioning. They can be found approximately twelve kilometers southeast of Nathon Bay. One of them offers an amazing experience and a chance to cool off at the same time. The water falls into one large natural pool.

Don´t miss out on the bizarre rock formations

This place is made famous by nature itself. Yes, exactly. It is a natural phenomenon located on the south coast of Koh Samui. What is it? Two rocks named Hin Ta and Hin Yai, which mean grandfather and grandmother. But if you think you’ll see rocks shaped like grandparents, you’re wrong. Hin Ta and Hin Yai are rocks that resemble human genitalia.

Weather on Koh Samui: when is the dry and rainy season on the island

Thailand ranks among the tropical countries. The climate here is influenced by the monsoons, which create three seasons in northern, northeastern, and central Thailand and two seasons in southern and southeastern Thailand. The climate makes Thailand one of the countries you can visit in any month of the year.

On the islands of the east coast, such as Koh Samui, Koh Tao and Koh Phangan, there are two dry weather seasons: July-August and January-April. The rainy season usually lasts from June to October. However, it does not rain continuously. Most of the time, it is a heavy monsoon downpour lasting few hours. The sun’s rays are intense, so be sure to pack UV filter sunglasses and high SPF sunscreen in your suitcase.

Transportation on Koh Samui: rent a scooter or take Songthaew taxis

The cheapest way to get around the island is undoubtedly on a scooter. You can find a rental shop on every corner, maybe even right in your hotel, just ask. Renting a scooter for a week, it costs very few euros (approx. 5 €). The only extra cost you will have is for fuel, which is much cheaper than in Europe, and you will be able to buy it at every corner from the homes of the locals, who sell it along every main road with the GASOLINE sign.

You can drive the scooter all over the island and still enjoy the great views. Before renting a scooter – make sure to take proper photos of it as a proof that you did not cause any damages, in case they want to charge you for any extra costs.

Fats are cheap and fast

Besides scooters, you can also be transported by Songthaew taxis, which are like shared TUK TUKs that can accommodate more than 10 people. They operate all over the island, but do not follow a fixed schedule. You can hitch a ride anywhere. You just need to agree with the driver on your destination and the price for your journey. Before getting off, don’t forget to ring the bell to signal the driver to stop at your destination.

Taxis can be expensive, but they are convenient (you can find them anywhere, anytime). However, be aware that taxi drivers are not very willing to negotiate fares with tourists. If you still opt for comfort, you’d better ask for the price of your journey in advance.

Renting a car is quite expensive. You can rent a car from large international companies such as Hertz or Kayak, but also from local companies. Renting a car on Koh Samui legally requires an international or Thai driver’s license. While local companies may not always check for this, it’s a standard requirement for major companies. When renting a car, make sure it includes car insurance because the traffic on Koh Samui is pretty crazy.
